![]() ![]() Today, that friend is still working at the same job she hated all those years ago. ![]() However, I was never able to make the damn introduction, because my friend, divining my purpose, immediately started thinking aloud, “Well, what if the new job doesn’t pay enough? What if I can’t pay my mortgage? What if he doesn’t like me? What if the people at the new job expected me to have all these degrees I don’t have?” Long story short: before anything could possibly happen, my friend ruled the introduction a waste of time, and made me promise not to do or say anything. That introduction in no way promised a new job the introduction promised nothing but opportunity. Note: I simply wanted to introduce my friend to a potentially influential contact. I wanted to introduce her to the friend of a friend, working at a company that I thought would be an excellent transition for my friend. Years ago, for example, I was a party with a friend whom I knew hated her job. No one can sabotage you like you can, namely, because no one else cares. The best tools won’t work, cannot work, if you don’t. There’s almost no point in taking the time to fix your resume, or write the most captivating LinkedIn profile, or order the coolest business cards, if you won’t spend the same amount of time getting your mind right. I’m going to nag encourage those investment bankers, and graphic artists and IP attorneys, those men and women, all the same way, when it comes to one crucial point: Ambition requires confidence. ![]() But all of these different people and their different goals, all need one thing in common to achieve their multiplicity of purpose: the confidence to create and then seize the opportunities necessary to their ambition. I’m getting ready to do a number of career development workshops, aimed at a variety of different groups-from investment bankers to attorneys to artists-, covering a variety of professional goals, and social media platforms. ![]()
